Today, Vance Thompson Vision became one of the first practices in the world to complete a successful RxSight lens surgery since its approval by the FDA. We’d like to wish a warm congratulations to Dr. Thompson, who completed the surgery this morning.
Vance Thompson Vision has been involved in clinical trials for this technology for over eight years, and Dr. Thompson has been instrumental in securing its FDA approval. To help gain approval, he served as a medical monitor on the study. In 2017, he testified to the FDA in Washington D.C., and the FDA approved the surgery in November of that year.
What is a Light Adjustable Lens?
RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery that can be adjusted after it has been implanted in the eye.
Why is this lens different from other IOLs used in cataract surgery?
Let’s start with how it works. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the clouded cataract and replaces it with a synthetic lens—in this case, the LAL.
After the eye has healed from surgery, the patient returns to the clinic to have a routine eye exam. Based on the results of the exam, the new lens is non-invasively exposed to UV light through a microscope in the doctor’s office. The special material of RxSight’s lens reacts to the UV light and changes shape based on the prescription selected during the eye exam.
Many cataract patients enjoy freedom from contacts or glasses for most activities after their surgery. While there have been many incredible advances in lens technology over the years, the ability to adjust the lens to the correct refractive error after surgery offers a major breakthrough for our cataract patients.
Currently, we are conducting two additional clinical trials with the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). We are dedicated to providing the upper Midwest with the world’s best technology, and that’s why we plan to continue participating in these trials for many years to come.
